The 13th Wind and Water Boat Show is taking place in Gdynia

The unusually hot weather that has persisted in much of Europe for the past two months blessed the opening of the Wind and Water Boat Show in Poland on Wednesday with temperatures of 32C. The show, held in Gdynia on the shores of the Baltic Sea, features 130 exhibitors with 120 boats on the water and some land-based exhibitors.

Wojciech Szczurek, president of Gdynia City, said at the opening ceremony: “It’s a great honour for our city to host the 13th Wind and Water show and the increase in size of the event shows how much the industry has developed over the past years. The boatbuilding industry is a very important one for Poland and is a major contributor to exports with 95% of the production exported. We are proud of the fact that the Polish boating industry is growing.”

The president of the Polish Chamber of Marine Industry and Water Sports (POLBOAT,) Sebastian Nietupski, spoke about the industry in more detail. “Quality is a magic word that we, the Polish boat manufacturers, aspire to. Our objective is to produce the best quality for the global markets. Our product portfolio is growing as our builders produce larger boats.

“We are the second largest producer to the USA in the world of outboard motorboats,” he adds. “Our production should reach 22,000 units this year which is the same level that we achieved in 2008 just before the global financial crisis that affected the boat industry worldwide. But now the average boat size is larger, we have become a major force in global boatbuilding with current production levels at an all-time high.”

Speaking to an invited group of 12 marine journalists and industry experts from Russia and the UAE, Nietupski went on to discuss the future for the Polish industry. “We are very keen to co-operate for the future with connections and investment in both directions, we have to broaden our horizons,” he said.

The show runs until August 12 at Gdynia Marina and is organised by Murator Expo in partnership with Zagle magazine. The strategic partner of the show is the City of Gdynia, the sailing capital of Poland.

The main goal of the Wind and Water Show is to promote sailing and watersports, while at the same time enabling enthusiasts to evaluate yachts, motorboats and sports equipment in their natural environment – in the water.
